Second beta of GNOME 3.6 arrives

The GNOME project has released the second and last beta of GNOME 3.6, the final release of which is due to be published on 26 September. The beta release, which carries the version number 3.5.91, mostly includes bug fixes. The behaviour of the Epiphany browser has been changed so that it now shows an overview of the user's most visited pages on startup or when a new tab or window is opened.

Lists of the changes for GNOME's core components and the default applications are available in the NEWS files for the release. However, since the code stabilisation phase of GNOME 3.6 only began two weeks ago with the first beta, most of the changes consist of bug fixes. A summary of all of the new features in the final release of GNOME 3.6 has been provided by GNOME developer Allan Day on his blog.

The project has now also opened the phase in which GNOME developers can suggest features for version 3.7 of the desktop. The first four suggestions include a redesign of the desktop's Totem video player and the ability for GNOME Shell to automatically update extensions from the GNOME Shell Extensions web site. The latter feature was originally planned for GNOME 3.6, but could not be completed in time for the feature freeze.
