OpenSolaris Oracle has stopped the free OpenSolaris CD shipping program. A posting on the OpenSolaris website discussion mailing list by Oracle's Derek Cicero says the related links and icons have been removed from the opensolaris.org site. Downloads of OpenSolaris are still available from the OpenSolaris downloads site.

The move will do little to reduce the tension in the OpenSolaris community over the future of OpenSolaris under Oracle. On Tuesday a "Call for action" was made on the OpenSolaris Governance Board mailing list. Suggestions over forking OpenSolaris, in the event Oracle were to close off the code, were made in comments, but it appears that currently the OpenSolaris Governance Board are getting very little information.

Simon Phipps, previously of Sun and a current OGB member, noted that "If you want forward-looking information, only a person authorised by Oracle's executives will be able to deliver it". According to Phipps discussions are apparently taking place within Oracle over "several major issues" and until Ellison and Oracle decide on these issues, he is not expecting a resolution to the "deeply frustrating" situation. However Phipps adds that "the only consequence of repeatedly asking Oracle staff for forward-looking information will be harm to our relationships together".
