Version 2.0 of Sun Microsystems' OpenDS directory service has been released, with a range of new features added to the open source server. The release of the all Java directory service was announced by Ludovic Poitou in his blog.

Poitou highlights the new features, such as a new graphical control panel for administration, a dedicated administration connector, SASL encryption for connections, full UTF8 support and a DSML to LDAP gateway which can be deployed as a web application. Further details are also available in the Release Notes.

OpenDS is available for Solaris, OpenSolaris, Windows 2003/2008 server and Red Hat, SUSE and Ubuntu Linux. It requires at least Java SE 5.0 and the DSML Gateway works with Sun's Web Applications Server 7, Glassfish 3 or the Apache project's free Tomcat version 6.0.20.
