OpenDS Directory Server 1.0 has been released. OpenDS is a pure Java directory server and is open source, released under the Common Developement and Distribution License (CDDL).

The OpenDS project started as an internal project within Sun Microsystems in 2005, with the aim of producing a high performance, scalable, extensible and secure directory system, and was open sourced in 2006. OpenDS is not related to Sun's Java System Directory Server, which is a seperate product from Sun. OpenDS is also free of the encumberances which prevented the open sourcing of the Java System Directory Server.

There has been some controversy over the governance of the project, which lead some to believe the project has stalled. Simon Phipps, Chief Open Source Office at Sun said "Far from perishing, it seems the OpenDS community has been working diligently to produce this first stable release of the open source LDAP 3 server."

The 1.0 release of OpenDS is available as source code and binary builds. It also includes a WebStart based installer, allowing users to click on a link and go directly into a graphical interface which steps the user through setting up their own OpenDS server. It is hoped that by this simple installation and being a pure Java application, OpenDS will make LDAP directory services more accessible, both for users and for different operating system platforms.
