Skype's Linux developers have officially confirmed that an open source version of the Linux Skype client is currently being developed. According to a Skype for Linux blog post, "having an open source UI will help us get adopted in the "multicultural" land of Linux distributions, as well as on other platforms and will speed up further development".

By simply opening the UI, the Skype developers will enable other desktop developers to create front ends using their preferred GUI tool kit. This means that developers could also optimise it for various mobile devices, such as Netbooks and smart phones.

The open source Linux client will reportedly be part of a "larger offering". However, further details about the status of the project are currently being withheld.
