Creative Commons, the Open Society Institute and the U.S. Department of Education are offering up to $25,000 in cash prizes for film makers who produce the best short videos explaining why open education is important to society. The competition runs until 5 June and is open to anyone who wants to take part.

The "Why Open Education Matters" competition, which started during Open Education Week, is awarding cash prizes from $1,000 up to $25,000 for the best three videos that explain "the use and promise of free, high-quality open educational resources and describe the benefits and opportunities these materials create for teachers, students and schools." Judges will include director Davis Guggenheim, cartoonist Nina Paley and actor and film maker James Franco.

All entries for the competition have to be submitted through the competition web site by 5 June and the winners will be announced on 18 July.
