Open Recall icon Open Recall is a space on The H for those things that are too small to package as news but are worth the linkage. This edition looks at Linux 3.5 nearing its end of life, the Fedora 19 naming process, speakers at the openSUSE Conference, Android 4.1.2 being open sourced, and the ROSA Desktop 2012 Alpha 2 and Notepad++ 6.2 releases.

  • Linux 3.5 is nearing its end of life – Greg Kroah-Hartman has announced the release of version 3.5.6 of the Linux kernel and urges users of the 3.5.x branch to upgrade their systems to 3.6 as soon as possible. According to Kroah-Hartman, who maintains the long term support versions of the kernel, "there will probably only be one more 3.5.y kernel release."

  • Fedora 19 naming process begins – The Fedora Project has started looking for code names for its next release, Fedora 19. Naming suggestions are being accepted on the Fedora Wiki until 16 October. Current suggestions include Steam Boiler, Parabolic Potassium, Happy Dragon, Flat Hippo, Death Star and Gabelstaplerfahrer (German for forklift driver).

  • openSUSE Conference 2012 kicks off next week – The openSUSE Conference 2012 will take place in Prague from 20 to 23 October. To give potential attendees an idea about the kind of talks that will take place at the event, the openSUSE project has published video interviews with a number of the speakers.

  • Android 4.1.2 open sourced – The source code for Android 4.1.2 has been released to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). The CyanogenMod team is already working on integrating the code into version 10 of their replacement ROM for several Android devices. According to reports, the update is also now rolling out to the first Nexus 7 devices.

  • Second alpha release of ROSA Desktop 2012 – The Mandriva-based ROSA Desktop distribution has included basic UEFI boot support in its latest alpha release. ROSA Desktop 2012 Alpha 2 also includes Linux 3.5.5, GRUB 2, KDE 4.9.2 and Firefox 15. ROSA Desktop is developed by the Russian company ROSA Laboratory which also releases a media centre distribution called ROSA Internet TV.

  • Notepad++ 6.2 – The latest version of the open source Windows text editor Notepad++ comes with significant improvements to the software's UDL (User Defined Language) system. UDL2, which is being introduced with this release, includes more keyword groups and increased flexibility in the language's syntax. UDL's purpose is to give users of Notepad++ the ability to extend the program with support for new languages.
