Dister Awards Logo Novell has announced the winners of the Dister Awards, worth $10,000 – Dister is the mascot for SUSE Studio. For this contest, originally launched by Novell to mark the release of SUSE Gallery, developers were invited to create innovative SUSE Studio appliances for "Community Use" or "Commercial Use".

In the "Commercial Use" category, the jury of five experts including openSUSE Community Manager Jos Poortvliet and the Linux Foundation's Jim Zemlin presented the award to the "Illumination Software Creation Station" graphical development tool. The first prize in the "Community Use" category went to "Hypergrid to Go", which allows the creation of multi-user 3D worlds similar to Second Life.

The jury also presented a "Spirit Award" for a particularly creative solution developed with SUSE Studio: this award was won by Gourav Shah for his FreeSWITCHBOX VoIP appliance.
