Miranda Logo The Miranda IM project developers have announced the release of version 0.9.0 of their open source instant messaging (IM) client. Miranda IM is a multi-protocol IM client for Windows systems that includes support for protocols such as AIM (AOL Instant Messenger), ICQ, IRC (Internet Relay Chat), Jabber, MSN and Yahoo. The client features a plug-in-based framework that allows users to easily customise their installations with over 350 different plug-ins.

According to lead developer Robert Rainwater, the major update includes a number of new features, many of which focus on improving unicode support and on overall protocol improvements. The 0.9.0 release is also the first official version to have a 64-bit core and support for the Windows 7 task bar. Other changes include a new icon theme, a Unicode-aware profile manager, support for SSL certificate validation and support for file transfers larger than 4 GB. The developers advise all users to upgrade to the latest release.

More details about the release can be found in the officail release announcement. Miranda IM v0.9.0 is available to download for Windows and is licensed under the GPL.
