Mandriva logo In a post on the Mandriva Project's Community Blog, Jean-Claude Vanier has announced that the foundation for the Mandriva Linux distribution will be called "OpenMandriva". The new name of the foundation was chosen as it was both the winner of an online poll and the name selected by Mandriva SA, the French company entity behind Mandriva.

While the poll, which first opened in early July, specifically asked users to vote on a new name for both "the future Mandriva Community Linux Project and Foundation", Vanier says that OpenMandriva is "only the name of the foundation," adding that "the name of the distribution itself is still to be determined". It is currently unclear why Mandriva has decided not to use the same OpenMandriva name for the project as well as the foundation.

Creation of the foundation began in June this year after Mandriva SA announced that it would be handing over control of the project to the community. The new OpenMandriva foundation will govern the project and oversee the development of the Linux distribution.

Update: Speaking to The H, Charles-H. Schulz, who is assisting Mandriva SA as an advisor, said that the name of the distribution will eventually chosen by the community once the OpenMandriva foundation has been properly setup, at which point the company "will no longer control this project".
