MIT's STAR project aims to close the divide between research and the classroom
StarCluster is designed to simplfy the management and set-up of a computing cluster using the Amazon EC2 compute cloud. The software consists of a package of Python scripts and a library which provides the management tools, incorporated into AMIs (Amazon Machine Images). These include OpenMPIm Sun Grid Engine, NFS, Scipy, Numpy and IPython. The AMI image is based on Ubuntu 9.04 and is available in 32bit and 64bit flavours.

All that is required to use the AMI is a configured Amazon EC2 account. StarCluster has been implemented by the Software Tools For Academics and Researchers (STAR) which creates tools to bridge the divide between scientific research and the classroom. The project, based at MIT, plans to add support for multiple clusters and dynamic load balancing to StarCluster in future releases. StarCluster is licensed under the LGPLv3.
