The Linux Foundation has announced a personal membership scheme, allowing community members to join the foundation for $49 and receive a T-shirt and a quarterly newsletter, but the membership privileges are limited.

The offer of personal membership is an offer of affiliated membership. Described as Associate Membership on the Linux Foundation site, the membership agreement makes it clear this is an affiliation and that affiliates are not members.

This means that the only voting privilege available is the ability to stand for or vote for a Linux Foundation board seat made available by the Foundation to represent the affiliate membership. Corporate members will still retain all their current rights, unaffected by the affiliated membership. The corporate membership of the Linux Foundation includes IBM, Novell, Intel, Oracle, Google, AMD, Cisco and many others.
