The Linux Foundation has announced the launch of a new holiday membership program, which it calls "Get One, Give One". Under the new program, a student will receive a one-year free membership to the Linux Foundation for every new individual member that joins. The program will run until the 31st of January, 2010 and, according to the foundation, "new members can elect to sponsor a student on the Linux Foundation wait list or can request the membership be given to a friend or family member with a valid student ID". Students themselves can apply for any unallocated sponsorships on an as available, first come first served, basis.

The scheme costs $99 (about £60) for an annual individual membership and includes some voting rights, an @linux.com email address, discounts on Foundation conferences and O'Reilly books and a T-shirt. The email address is a forwarding service as the @linux.com email address is tied to the membership. Other benefits include discounts of up to 40 per cent on purchases of hardware and accessories from Dell, HP and Lenovo. Individual Student Memberships usually cost $25 per annum and require verification from students that shows their enrollment in a school, college or university.
