The GNOME Foundation has announced that Karen Sandler is to join the foundation as Executive Director. Sandler is moving from her role as General Council at the Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC), where she advised a "wide range of free and open source software organizations". Her selection brings to an end the search for a new executive director which began in January.

The SFLC advises its clients on a wide range of issues including licensing, trademarks and patents, and legal issues concerning non-profit organisations. In her work with the SFLC, Sandler advised clients such as the Free Software Foundation, the Apache Software Foundation and X.Org Foundation. The GNOME Foundation is also a client of the SFLC.

Stormy Peters – former Executive Director, who stepped down to join Mozilla last November and was recently elected to the GNOME Board as a Director – says that “Karen brings a wealth of experience in free software projects and nonprofits as well as a passion for free software. That experience will be invaluable as GNOME continues to expand its reach with GNOME 3.0 and GNOME technologies.”
