The KDE project has rebranded itself and is retiring the "K Desktop Environment" expansion of the project's name in favour of just being KDE. The change has taken place to more accurately reflect the projects status as a community and the KDE name will also be used as an umbrella brand for the applications, workspace managers and platform that the community develops.

The plan is to immediately switch over to the new branding for communications within the community and, over the next months, update all online resources and marketing material. KDE Workspace will refer to the Plasma netbook and desktop environments. KDE Applications will refer to applications which can run independently of the KDE WorkSpace. Finally the KDE Platform will refer to the libraries and services which are needed to run the applications and workspace. Full details of the changes are contained in a document on the KDE Community Wiki.
