JavaFX 1.0: Sun wants to revolutionise the web with Java - again
Considerably later than originally planned, Sun has released its JavaFX platform for creating Rich Internet Applications (RIA). A first beta version of the scripting language and runtime was presented at the JavaOne conference in 2007, and an updated preview at this years JavaOne.
The development environment includes a compiler, runtime tools and libraries, as well as extensions and integration for the NetBeans 6.5 IDE, packaged as NetBeans IDE for JavaFX 1.0. The package also includes a plug-in for Eclipse and a JavaFX runtime. The desktop component uses Java Standard Edition (Java SE) 6 Update 10 runtime that allows Java applets to be dragged from the browser and dropped onto the desktop, where they can be used. The JavaFX Production Suite integrates graphic design tasks from programs like Photoshop or Illustrator into JavaFX applications.
JavaFX for Mac OS X and Windows is available to download now, with Linux and Solaris versions to follow at a later date. A preview of JavaFX Mobile, a version specially adapted for mobile devices, is also included.
