The Gnuaccounting developers have released version 0.7.8 of their free open-source Java accounting application that embeds OpenOffice and utilises MySQL or OpenOffice's HSQLDB to create and administrate invoices, credit memos, delivery notes, bills etc. The program is intended for use by small and medium-sized companies and now for the first time supports the deferment of VAT prepayment in countries where VAT is estimated and collected in advance.

In this version stability has been improved and a number of bugs have been fixed, although the developers say this release should be regarded as a beta. Gnuaccounting now correctly rounds account statements imported via HBCI. A list of changes can be found in the Release Notes.

Gnuaccounting is available for downloading from the project's web site. It requires either 32-bit or 64-bit Linux or 32-bit Windows, Java Runtime Environment 1.6 or higher and OpenOffice.org. Gnuaccounting is provided under the GPL v2 and further information is available in the release notes. The previous version is Gnuaccounting 0.7.7 released in July.
