The Gentoo team has made live DVD 12.0 available to download as an ISO image file; this reflects the current development state of the self-compiled distribution. Gentoo is available for 32- and 64-bit systems and includes version 3.1.5 of the Linux kernel, KDE 4.7.4, Gnome 3.2.1, Firefox 9.0, the current developer version of LibreOffice, and the Amarok 2.5 audio player, which was released in December.

The live system cannot be installed on a hard drive and is only designed to demonstrate Gentoo's current range of features and components. However, it does offer a persistent-home option for repeated use and allows packages to be installed in live mode via the AUFS filesystem. The developers have started a separate Gentoo forum thread for questions about the DVD.

Gentoo is a rolling release distribution whose software is updated continuously. Therefore, "releases" such as the current live DVD only represent a snapshot of the distribution's ongoing development. Gentoo provides the source code for program packages which users need to compile themselves when installing the distribution. While this is designed to enable users to create distributions that are highly customised to specific requirements, it does require at advanced Linux skills.
