Zoom Sabayon's configuration of the MATE desktop features two toolbars on the top and bottom of the screen, very similar to the classic GNOME 2 desktop

Sabayon 10, the latest release of the Gentoo-derived Linux distribution, introduces a new edition of the operating system with version 1.4.1 of the MATE desktop, a fork of the older 2.x branch of GNOME. For the first time, Sabayon also provides Amazon Machine Images (AMI) to deploy the distribution on Amazon's EC2 cloud platform.

Sabayon's MATE variant brings the number of live images up to four; images based on GNOME 3.4.2, KDE 4.9 and Xfce 4.10 are also available. The KDE variant will be upgraded to 4.9.1 through the distribution's package manager, shortly. Sabayon developer Fabio Erculiani describes the new EC2 images in a blog post, pointing out that the distribution now includes kernels that are optimised to run on Amazon's cloud infrastructure.

Sabayon 10 is built on version 3.5.4 of the Linux kernel and improves on the Gentoo Hardened profile that was first introduced with Sabayon 9. Hardened Server images are now available for 32- and 64-bit systems and, in contrast to the ServerBase images, include a full X Server, open source 3D graphics drivers and a graphical installer.

The kernels included in Sabayon 10 can boot from ZFS partitions but the distribution's installer is not yet able to create them. Kernel mode setting (KMS) has been improved and the distribution includes a development snapshot of version 9 of the Mesa 3D drivers.

Detailed information on all the changes in this release is available in the official release announcement. 32- and 64-bit versions of the various Sabayon editions can be downloaded from the project's mirrors.
