KDE developer Aaron J. Seigo has provided further details on the 7-inch tablet he announced last week. Seigo says that the "Spark" tablet is expected to start shipping in May, and that prospective buyers will be able to pre-order the device worldwide from next week.

Based on the Zenithink C71, the tablet will offer a 1.3 megapixel camera, 2 x USB, a MicroSD slot and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi capabilities – data transfers via mobile networks (3G/GPRS) will not be supported in the first version of the device. The operating system is based on the Meego derivative Mer which was created after the Meego project began to be wound down. Spark's default desktop will be Plasma Active, a user interface that is based on many of the components used in KDE Plasma Workspaces.

Software and content will be available via a content store, the Mer package repositories and the Open Build Service, and app developers will be able to sell commercial apps via the store. The plan is to release the tablet "unlocked", so that users will be able to install other operating systems. The device concept will allow tablets to be customised for specific uses, and QtQuick will be the recommended software development framework.
