FreeBSD 8.0 RC1 released
The FreeBSD developers have announced the availability of the first release candidate (RC1) for version 8.0 of their free Unix derivative. FreeBSD 8.0 RC1, originally scheduled to be released last week, includes several improvements and bug fixes since the previous betas.
The RC1 release addresses a number of IPv6 related issues which were discovered in the previous betas and includes a new ZFS patch set. As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical machines is not advised. The developers note that the total number of release candidates will depend on how well the first RC does, however, they are currently planning at least one more RC release. Users testing the release are encouraged to report any problems that they experience so that any major bugs can be addressed before the final release.
More details about the release, including a list of known issues, can be found in the release announcement and on the project's FreeBSD 8.0 TODO wiki. FreeBSD 8.0 RC1 ISO images and a "memory stick" image for amd64/i386 architectures are available to download from the project's mirrors. Users currently running FreeBSD 7.0 or later can upgrade via the freebsd-update utility. The final version of FreeBSD 8.0 is expected to be released in "early October".
