OpenBSD 4.4 has been released by the OpenBSD team. Version 4.4 is the 25th release of the free BSD Unix operating system and offers new and improved drivers. For example, it now supports the Intel G33 and G35 chipsets as well as a range of new Wi-Fi chips and offers improved ACPI support for some Thinkpad and Asus notebooks.

The operating system now also supports large Sun and Fujitsu servers with SPARC64 V to SPARC64 VII and UltraSPARC VI, T1 and T2 processors, which join the many other platforms OpenBSD runs on. Numerous additional improvements were made to the system tools and the basic system functionality, such as improvements to the buffer cache to increase the filesystem performance and optimisation of memory management.

OpenBSD 4.4 features are covered in detail in the release notes. The software is available to download from numerous mirrors. OpenBSD also have a CD release, proceeds of which go to supporting the developers. The CD release can be purchased for €50 – £39 – on three CD-ROMs.
