Fedora Scholarship programme announced

The Fedora Project, sponsored by Red Hat, have announced the creation of the Fedora Scholarship programme and the inaugural scholarship recipient for 2008, Ricky Zhou. The Scholarship programme is designed to recognise college and university bound students around the world for their contributions to free software and the Fedora Project.

Recipients will receive $2000 for each year of university along with funding for travel and lodging to the nearest FUDCon, Fedora User and Developer Conference, if they wish to attend.

The 2008 recipient Ricky Zhou, who will be attending Carnegie Mellon University in the autumn, has made numerous contributions to the Fedora project, including work with the Infrastructure, Websites, Localisation and Package Maintainer teams. Most recently, Zhou has been working on packaging and reviewing software for the Fedora Project.

Paul Frields, Fedora Project leader at Red Hat said "We hope the Fedora Scholarship serves as a catalyst for younger generations to become involved in open source projects, and continue the positive momentum behind not only Fedora, but all free and open source software."

The 2009 Scholarship opens for applications on first of September and closes on the 16th of February 2009, with application details on the Fedora Project Wiki.
