Estonia to open source security tools

A project to protect national internet infrastructure in Estonia is planning to publish some of the tools it has developed as open source under the European Union Public Licence (EUPL). The project, run by the National Informatics Centre (RIA), is already using a number of open source tools in its goal to monitor Estonian network traffic and prevent network problems.

"We are using many great open source tools for this project", says Jani Kenttälä, CTO at Clarified, one of the companies working with RIA, "That is why we will give back to the open source community the tools that we develop for this project". The first two open source components the project plans to release are "Snort4all" and "Abuse helper"; the developers hope to have them available early next year. Snort4all provides intrusion detection and monitors for other network events. Abuse Helper is designed to assist teams at CERT Estonia manage network abuse incidents.
