Alfresco have announced that the community version of Alfresco's enterprise content management system now implements version 1.0 of the OASIS Contnent Management Interoperability Services (CMIS). CMIS 1.0 is currently in public review and Alfresco believes that the availability of an implementation of the specification will enable developers to participate in this review more effectively. The public review of CMIS 1.0 ends on the 22nd of December.

CMIS is a specification which aims to deliver a common interface using either REST or Web Services. When widely implemented this will allow the development of applications that are able to use any CMIS supporting content management system. The specification is supported by Adobe Systems, EMC, IBM, Microsoft, OpenText, Oracle, SAP and Alfresco. Paul Hampton of Alfresco told The H that CMIS was opening the way for interoperable content management with future cloud systems. A developer could write their application with the CMIS API and use it with a range of cloud based CMS services from different vendors. "It's the first time there's been an industry wide interoperability standard like this in content management" he added.

The Alfresco Community Edition 3.2r2, which contains the CMIS 1.0 implementation, is available to download and is licenced under GPL with expections for other FLOSS licences.
