Document Foundation Logo In what appears to be a response to Oracle's "community-based OpenOffice.org" announcement, The Document Foundation has restated its goals for the Foundation and the LibreOffice software. The posting by Charles-H. Schulz on behalf of the Foundation's Steering Committee says that the Foundation has already laid out a future path of development for the OpenOffice.org community and codebase, the one that it had announced in September 2010 when the Foundation launched.

Schulz says that the Foundation will continue as planned, and in what may be a gesture towards Oracle, that it is always willing to include new members and partners. The posting closes with an assurance that the Foundation is "making every possible effort to offer a smooth transition to the project" and that it will keep the community informed.

Oracle's Edward Screven had announced on Friday 15 April that it intended OpenOffice.org to become a "purely community-based open source project" and that it plans no longer to offer a commercial version of OpenOffice. Oracle gave no details of its plans for the OpenOffice.org codebase's copyright or trademarks, both of which it holds under arrangements created by Sun Microsystems.

Sun had promised it would create a foundation for OpenOffice but that had not happened by the time Oracle started buying Sun in April 2009 (a deal cleared by the EU regulators and completed in January 2010). Despite assurances that the company would be investing in OpenOffice, tensions remained in the OpenOffice community, coming to a head in the September 2010 launch of LibreOffice and the Document Foundation, a community-organised and community-based fork of the OpenOffice.org code.
