Desktop Linux increases presence

Source: NetMarketShare According to a report, Linux's presence on the desktop has been steadily increasing since last summer. The NetMarketShare report shows Linux's desktop presence rising from 1% share in December 2010 to a 1.41% share in December 2011. NetMarketShare data before 2010 has shown Linux tending to settle at around 1%. The upward trend appears to have begun in August 2011.

Year on year comparisons between December 2010 and December 2011 show Microsoft Windows with a slight decrease, from 93.78% to 92.23%, and Mac OS X with a slight increase, 5.21% to 6.36%. In the mobile market iOS still holds 52.10% of the market, followed by Java ME at 21.27% and Android at 16.29%.

NetMarketShare, a Net Applications service, estimates market share from visitors to web sites which are part of its HitsLinks Analytics and SharePost networks. This network includes 40,000 web sites and generates results from a data set of around 160 million unique visits per month. Data is weighted by country population and no margin of error is given for NetMarketShare figures.

On The H, in 2011, 25.36% of visitors used Linux, 57.21% used Windows and 7.89% used Mac OS X.
