Mandriva Logo Following a one week delay due to some "last-minute problems", the Mandriva development team has released a second beta for Mandriva Linux 2011. The second beta will be followed by one release candidate; the final version of Mandriva Linux 2011 is scheduled to arrive on 13 June 2011.

Mandriva Linux 2011 Beta 2 is based on the latest 2.6.38.3 Linux kernel and, like the previous beta, features KDE SC 4.6.1, the first point update to the latest major release of the popular Linux and Unix desktop. Package updates include version 3.3.0 of the Document Foundation's LibreOffice office suite (3.3.2 is the latest stable version), Firefox 4.0, Thunderbird 3.1.9 and version 4.6.0 of the GNU Compiler Collection.

The developers say that the latest development preview integrates "most of the UI and desktop-related features", which include new login manager functionality, stack folders integration, a new welcome and launcher application, as well as a new overall desktop look-and-feel – details and screenshots can be found in blog posts by developer Eugeni.

As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. Users testing the release are encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs that they encounter.

Details about the development preview can be found in a post on the Mandriva Blog, on the 2011 Development wiki and on the 2011 Beta 2 page. The second beta for Mandriva Linux 2011 is available to download from one of the project's mirrors.

The latest stable release of Mandriva Linux is version 2010.2, an incremental security and stability update from December 2010.
