Codeweavers has released version 9 of its Windows compatibility application Crossover for Linux and Mac OS X. The new version brings with it a new user interface designed to make the installation of Windows programs easier.

By integrating the online compatibility database into the application, Crossover 9 makes it easier to set specialised compatibility settings to allow for better operation of particular programs. Users who have already found which settings are required for a program can post their installation recipe to the database making it almost immediately available to other users. Codeweavers hopes that this will broaden Crossover's range of executable Windows programs.

Crossover is an expanded version of Wine, the free software solution that allows programs using the Windows API to run on Linux and Max OS X. without needing a Microsoft operating system or a virtual machine. Codeweavers, the main sponsor of the Wine project, offers Crossover at £25.99 for the standard version and £44.99 for the Pro version which includes games, enhanced support and deployment options and multi-user support.
