Couchbase Server announced in Enterprise and Community editions

Couchbase has announced that its NoSQL database server, Couchbase Server, will be available in both enterprise and community editions. Based on the NoSQL database and Apache project CouchDB, Couchbase Server incorporates GeoCouch, an Erlang based and tightly integrated geospatial indexing system for location aware applications.

Although Couchbase, the company, was formed by the merger of CouchOne and Membase, this first product does not include any of the Membase technology. The Couchbase Server is available in both Enterprise and Community versions and Couchbase says the difference between the two lies entirely in the fact that the Enterprise Edition has a rigorous quality assurance process, "long-tail" maintenance, indemnification and SLA support. The company says that the API for the Enterprise Edition is "fully compatible with the Couchbase Server Community Edition". Pricing for Couchbase Server Enterprise Edition subscriptions range from $999 per node (10x5 support, 5 cases), to $4,499 (24x7 support, unlimited cases).

Both Enterprise and Community editions are available to download for Red Hat and Ubuntu Linux and Windows. A Mac OS X version of the Community edition is also available.The Enterprise Edition is a free download but with a non-free licence, while the Community Edition is under a community agreement which allows redistribution.

The company also announced that an advisory board had been appointed to help it shape its strategy and technical direction. The board includes Josh Berkus, a core team member of the PostgresSQL development team, Richard Hipp, architect and primary author of SQLite, Roy Fielding, one of the authors of the HTTP specification and many other technologists and entrepreneurs.
