Couchbase has announced a developer preview of version 2.0 of Couchbase Server. Version 2.0 sees the the unification of the CouchDB server with MemBase Server, to offer a document-oriented database with MemBase's distributed key-value store and the MemCached distributed cache in one server. The merged product has been expected since CouchOne and MemBase Inc merged in February. The new server should, the company says, be easy to install and manage, and will bring new indexing and query support; the combination of technologies offers "the lowest latency, highest throughput NoSQL database available".

The previous CouchBase Server, version 1.0 – a packaged version of CouchDB with additions such as GeoCouch – has been renamed Couchbase Single Server and will continue to offer the CouchDB functionality.

The company also took the opportunity to announce its new Couchbase Certification Program aimed at helping developers and administrators demonstrate their proficiency in the NoSQL database technology. The new program's first certification exams were administered at this week's CouchConf developer conference in San Francisco.

Further information about the developer preview can be found on the Couchbase Server 2.0 page and in the release notes. The developer preview of Couchbase Server 2.0 is available to download from the project's web site; documentation is provided.
