The Linux Mint developers have continued their work on Cinnamon, a replacement shell for GNOME 3 based on a fork of the GNOME shell. Cinnamon was first announced in December when Clement Lefebvre, project leader of both Linux Mint and Cinnamon, laid out a plan to create a desktop based on GNOME 3 technology but with the familiar layout of GNOME 2. The announcement was accompanied by the first alpha builds of Cinnamon.

Described as significantly better than the previous release, the latest update, version 1.1.3, has added some mintMenu features to the Cinnamon menu and a "first batch" of configuration options, such as defining favourite applications, panel launchers, menu naming and auto-hiding. Full details of the changes in 1.1.3 are given in the release announcement. What the release lacks though is a graphical configuration tool and support for extensions and themes. Lefebvre says that these three elements are "the main priority for 1.1.4".

Lefebvre has also officially introduced the GPLv2 licensed Cinnamon to the wider Linux Mint community in a blog posting where he notes that Cinnamon is already available for Ubuntu 11.10, Fedora 16, openSUSE 12.1 and Arch Linux, as well as Linux Mint 12. Cinnamon now has its own web site for announcements and other news. Deb packages are available from the project's github repository.
