The Ubuntu One team has announced the launch of a new mobile app for iOS devices including the Apple iPhone. With the Ubuntu One Files app, users can access and manage their files, including music and photos, stored on Canonical's Ubuntu One (U1) cloud storage platform. The app supports uploading and downloading files between an iOS device and U1, and also allows files to be renamed. Users can choose to have the app automatically upload images taken using their device to their personal cloud each time the app is launched.
While the app can run on iPads, it has not yet been optimised as a universal application to take full advantage of the available screen size. Ubuntu One Files available as a free download from the iTunes App Store and requires iOS 4.0 or later; an Ubuntu One Files app has been available for Android devices since mid-2011.
The managed file storage and synchronisation service is primarily targeted at users of the Ubuntu Linux distribution and is included by default with the OS – it also works on Windows systems. The basic Ubuntu One Free service includes 5 GB of storage without streaming support at no charge, while the Music Streaming service, which comes with 20 GB of storage, costs $3.99 per month or $39.99 per year; a 30 day trial is available. U1 is operated by UK-based Canonical Ltd, which sponsors the open source Ubuntu operating system.
