Appcelerator Titanium; open source competitor to AIR?

Appcelerant have made a preview release of Appcelerator Titanium available. Titanium is an open source RIA (Rich Internet Applications) platform designed to take on Adobe's AIR and others. Appcelerant has Titanium runtimes for Windows and Mac OS X, with a Linux runtime promised in Q1 2009 and mobile platform support in mid 2009. Titanium applications are created using HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

Titanium allows developers to use native windows, with application and system menus, desktop notification and file system access. It has built in database support and a plug-in architecture to allow for extensions. The packaging process is managed from the command line, which should allow for easier integration with automated tools.

Demos of the technology, including Tweetanium, a desktop Twitter client, Playtanium, a desktop YouTube player and a contact manager are available on the Titanium website, as installable applications or as source code. Appcelerator Titanium is licensed under the Apache Public Licence 2 and has been built using open source components including WebKit, Gears, Chromium, GTK+, jQuery and Ruby as well as Appcelerator's own SDK.
