Develop iPhone, Android and desktop applications with Appcelerator Titanium Mobile & Titanium Desktop

California-based Appcelerator has announced the beta release of Appcelerator Titanium Desktop, a desktop development platform for creating web enabled desktop applications using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Titanium also supports applications developed using Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight or any third-party AJAX library. From a technical standpoint, Titanium works similarly to Adobe AIR, however, the software is open source and is released under version 2.0 of the Apache Public License (APL).

The company has also announced a by request beta release of Titanium Mobile, that can be used to create mobile applications for Apple's iPhone operating system and for Google Android. The framework shares common APIs across devices and allows Web developers to create rich applications using the JavaScript, HTML and CSS knowledge that they likely already have. Appcelerator say that Objective-C and Java, two languages that would normally be needed for iPhone and Android development, are not required.

Although at the moment mobile and desktop development are presented as separate and the beta downloads are separated, according to a company spokesperson Appcelerator Titanium is a single integrated product and the full release version will be capable of developing both mobile and desktop applications.
