Apache Directory Studio 1.2.0 aims for easier LDAP server creation

The Apache Foundation has released version 1.2.0 of their open source Apache Directory Studio, an Eclipse based LDAP Browser and Directory client which is available as a standalone application or as a plugin for Eclipse. Directory Studio will work with any LDAP server but has been especially designed to work with the Apache DS, the Apache LDAP directory server.

A major new feature of Directory Studio is the ability to run Apache DS from within Directory Studio or Eclipse, making it "super easy (and fast) to create and run an LDAP server" according to the announcement. The configuration editor has been updated to support read/write modification of the Apache DS server.xml file on Apache DS 1.5.0, 1.5.1, 1.5.2 and 1.5.3.

Directory Studio includes an LDAP browser, an editor for LDIF files, an ACI editor and a schema editor. The LDAP browser supports read and write access to an LDAP server. The LDIF editor allows for LDIF files, the plain text data interchange format used for exchanging data between LDAP servers, to be modified with syntax highlighting and content assistance. ACI editing is an Apache DS specific option for modifying the Access Control Information on a server. The schema editor allows for the structure of LDAP directory information to be modified to map it to the organisational structure desired.

The Directory Studio application is a Java application and is available on Mac OS X, Linux and Windows, and can be downloaded as a standalone application or installed as an Eclipse plugin.
