Clip art etc

Other collections cater for images such as clip art, wall papers and icons.Open Clipart is dedicated explicitly to free clip art - many images are already in SVG format and can directly be edited with Inkscape. Vecteezy (slogan: "Stupid Name – Cool Vectors") is a new site whose clip art offers more visual "jazz" than that of Open Clipart. Vecteezy is more like a clip art portal which allows designers to list their files while hosting them elsewhere. Clip art files at Vecteezy are published under various Creative Commons varieties.

Politically conscious poster design enthusiasts can register their work with Design Reaction and publish it under Creative Commons. Design Reaction's idea is to publish graphically appealing posters addressing a variety of political topics such as world hunger, AIDS or arms control for non-commercial (political) purposes - not every NGO has an advertising budget like that of Greenpeace. Free Sprites demonstrates how to solve the problem of discarded projects - by releasing 700 pixel art avatars free for all under CC and enabling other designers to use them in their work.

Of course, there are also immense stocks of public domain images whose copyright expired long ago. The beautiful plant images used in Wikipedia, by the way, come from Köhler's Medicinal Plants guide of 1887. It generally pays to browse through Wikimedia (not -pedia), as this contains an ample collection of images and media under various free licenses.
