The FBI's "Operation Bot Roast", intended to track down botnet operators and educate the public about botnets, has produced its first results. The FBI has reported that three arrests have been made based on the results of its investigations. So far, the investigations have discovered over one million IP addresses of infected computers.

The operation is taking place in collaboration with public institutions and corporations. For example, the CERT Coordination Center of Carnegie Mellon University notifies owners of infected computers. The US government agency also thanks Microsoft and the Botnet Task Force, which have passed on helpful information about botnet activities.

Within the framework of "Bot Roast", the FBI has so far fingered three suspects. James B., of Arlington, Texas, has allegedly operated a botnet that has infected tens of thousands of computers. Jason D. from Covington, Kentucky is being indicted for distributed denial-of-service attacks and Robert S. from Seattle, Washington is going on trial for allegedly sending millions of spam mails over botnets.

These three arrests are merely a drop in the ocean. However, botnet operators in the USA and their allies may not feel so safe from now on. The FBI announces in their report, that they will continue to pursue with vigour individuals who are involved in cyber crime.
