In the recently released versions of its antivirus software, Avira made a mistake that may leave users without updates if they install the program in a path other than the preset default. Avira says the problem occurs if the installation path is longer than around 30 to 40 characters. The vendor says that it is aware of the problem and will remedy it in the next version that it plans to release at the beginning of June.

Unfortunately, the very users affected will not automatically receive the update. As a result, users who rely on the software's automatic function and do not check whether their software is up to date on their own may be left to surf the net with a computer that is not sufficiently protected. Users who have installed Antivir somewhere other than under the preset path are therefore advised to check whether the update mechanism is still working and install the software under the standard path if necessary.

Update:

According to Avira the update component fails to work if the installation path is longer than 49 characters. The vendor now plans to release a hotfix for the affected program preupdate.exe which users can order via e-mail at support@avira.com. Also, new installer packages will be available on the download servers from Thursday this week, the company said.
