NetBSD Logo The NetBSD development team has announced the arrival of the first feature update to the 5.0 release branch, NetBSD 5.1. According to the developers, the major release includes a variety of critical security and bug fixes, as well as better hardware support and new features.

NetBSD 5.1 features the addition of RAIDframe parity maps, which the developers say greatly improves parity rewrite times after unclean shutdown, X.Org updates, and Xen PCI pass-through and PAE Dom0 support. Other changes in the release include kernel fixes and networking, driver and platform updates. The developers note that all of the fixes in the previous 5.0.1 and 5.0.2 security / critical updates are cumulative, meaning that the latest update also contains all of the fixes since the corresponding minor release. All users are encouraged to upgrade to the latest release.

More details about the major update, including a full list of security fixes and changes, can be found in the release notes and in the change log. NetBSD 5.1 is available to download as an ISO image from one of the project's mirrors. NetBSD is released under the BSD license.

The developers have dedicated the NetBSD 5.1 update to the memory of developer Martti Kuparinen, who died in a traffic accident in June of this year. Kuparinen created and maintained numerous packages in pkgsrc, updated two packet filter solutions distributed with NetBSD and improved several hardware drivers.
