Microsoft Logo An article in Microsoft‘s Knowledge Base has announced the end of SteadyState: The kiosk mode for Windows XP and Vista, which can be installed on top of the OS, will only remain available until December 31, 2010 as a free download; on June 30, 2011, Microsoft will then largely discontinue support. The software vendor has not yet stated any reasons.

SteadyState was originally published as the "Shared Computer Toolkit". The program allows the rights of users with an account that has limited rights to be restricted even further. For instance, such users can only launch specific programs, no longer surf, or only use the PC for a certain amount of time. If desired, all changes such users make to a system can also be undone later.
