Microsoft has published a list of programs that may "experience a loss of functionality", if they run at all, once Service Pack 1 has been installed on Windows Vista. In particular, the virus scanner Bitdefender Antivirus 10 is affected, as are Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 and Zone Alarm Security Suite 7.1. However, updated versions of the applications listed have reportedly been released to remedy these problems.

If the application is not listed, Microsoft recommends that users contact the vendor. For instance, the New York Times Reader is apparently detrimentally affected, as is Rising Firewall.

Overall, the list is relatively short. With SP2 for Windows XP, the list of applications that no longer ran was much longer. Back then, SP2 made more far-reaching changes to functions in XP than SP1 makes in Vista.
