Sun has released update 6 for the Java runtime environments in version 1.6.0 for download from its servers. Generally, the vendor patches security holes with such updates, but this time no details have been provided.

According to Sun's release notes, among other things, the new version updates time zone information. Java WebStart also reportedly requires less memory. A problem in the crypto classes can be considered a security issue; memory leaks can occur when Kerberos authentication is used along with LoginContext, and a crash may be the result.

As usual, the installation program for Java 1.6.0_06 does not remove previous versions of the software. Users are advised to download and install the latest version as soon as possible. You will have to remove the previous version manually via the menu item in the software applet under Windows Control Panel.
