The new OwnCloud attachment plugin for the Zarafa groupware's WebApp web frontend allows files that are stored on a user's private OwnCloud server to be attached to emails. To provide this functionality, the Zarafa server itself retrieves the file from the OwnCloud server; the files are not transferred onto the local PC. Therefore, the solution can be used on public computers, for example at internet cafes.

The OwnCloud plugin is a community developed plugin and is based on a previously developed Dropbox plugin which offers the same capability for Dropbox users. Zarafa itself offers a number of other capabilities for importing documents into its WebApp front end, including the ability to include files held on an Alfresco enterprise CMS system.

OwnCloud is a software suite written in PHP that synchronises files, calendar items, contacts, music and bookmarks with a private server. The current version 4.5 offers a versioning feature for files and can store data on Amazon S3, Dropbox, Google Drive and Strato Hidrive. Clients exist for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows, as well as for Android and iOS; the mobile clients have recently been updated.
