Version 2.0 of the Banshee media player released

After more than six months of development, the Banshee development team has released version 2.0 of its open source media player. According to the developers, the latest stable release and successor to Banshee 1.8 includes several new features and "lots of polish".

Banshee 2.0 features the addition of support for embedded and external-file subtitles, as well as updates to the user interface (UI) that make it "cleaner and more usable". The active source's title bar has been removed and the search bar has been moved to the side of the volume button. Additionally, the source list now includes smaller icons, podcasts episodes are shown in a grid, and the seek slider and search entry are resizable.

Source: banshee.fm Track actions, such as play, queue, remove, delete, edit and properties, now also work in the artist and album browser. Furthermore, the Ubuntu One Music Store and SoundMenu extensions have been moved from Banshee Community Extensions to core Banshee extensions.

Written in C#, using Mono and GNOME technologies such as GTK# and GStreamer, Banshee, formerly known as Sonance until 2005, can encode and decode various media formats, including Ogg Vorbis, MP3 and FLAC. The cross-platform player supports Linux and Mac OS X. A technology preview of Banshee for Windows, which the developers consider to be of "alpha-quality", is also available.
