Ubuntu Studio The Ubuntu Studio team have announced that they will be re-basing their project on the lightweight Xfce desktop environment instead of Ubuntu's new default Unity desktop. Unlike other desktops such as GNOME and KDE, Unity is developed in-house by the Ubuntu developers and is a replacement for the GNOME Shell.

According to Core Team member Cory Kontros, the team came to the decision "after various discussions, investigation and tinkering", adding that they felt that Unity and GNOME-Shell do not fit their "target audience or intended workflow". Kontros goes on to note that the team will be working on a custom user interface that will feature the Avant Window Navigator (AWN) on top of Xfce, complete with new art and packages.

Ubuntu Studio is an officially recognised Ubuntu derivative that features a number of applications for multimedia production. The specialist Linux distribution is aimed at audio, video and graphics enthusiasts and professionals. The latest stable release of Ubuntu Studio is version 11.04, which is based on Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal", from the end of April 2011.
