SourceForge.net: four billion served

SourceForge Inc. has announced that its SourceForge.net application and code repository site has served its four billionth download. The four billionth application was downloaded on the 8th of June from PortableApps.com, a popular portable software site and open source platform that lets users install and run applications from a USB flash drive. PortableApps will receive a free trip to the OSCON conference taking place in San Jose from the 21st to the 25th of July and admittance to SourceForge's Community Choice Awards 2009 ceremony. According to PortableApps founder John T. Haller, "We're currently on the verge of our 100 millionth portable app download and that would not have been possible without SourceForge's continued support".

"Our technology enthusiast users are not simply 'clicking through'; SourceForge users are deeply engaged and interested in the entire experience," said SourceForge's Jon Sobel, "Not only are they downloading software, applications and tools, they are also regularly giving back by adding more content or providing feedback."

Established in 1999, SourceFourge.net now has more than 2.3 million registered users and hosts over 230,000 projects, making it the world's largest open source community download site with an average of 1.8 million downloads taking place each day.
