João Cardoso, a developer at Finnish Ruby on Rails company Kisko Labs, has announced the release of Snowfinch, his open source real-time web analytics software. Built using Ruby on Rails and MongoDB, Snowfinch was developed as part of Cardoso's thesis.

Cardoso says that the software provides users with everything that they need to "track and visualise analytics from multiple sites" in real-time. Snowfinch currently supports the tracking of page views, active visits and visitors on a site, as well as page views and active visitors for a given page. Monitoring based on a URI query key-value pair or other referrers is also supported. However, the developer notes that "this is only the beginning".

According to the project's initial roadmap, planned new features include the ability to display data for any given period beyond the past two days, custom visitor tagging and asynchronous data collection. Other additions will include geographic location for visitors, filtering by custom page metadata, and collecting and displaying referrer information.

More details about Snowfinch, including screenshots, can be found in a post on the Kisko Labs blog. Snowfinch source code is hosted on GitHub and is licensed under the MIT license. Recent versions of Ruby and MongoDB are required – Ruby 1.9.2 is recommended.
