Slackware Linux 12.2 released

After about seven months, the developers have released version 12.2 of Slackware, which is probably the oldest Linux distribution still being maintained. Compared to the previous version, however, it contains very few substantial changes.

Apart from kernel version 2.6.27.7, the developers also added Slackware support for HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer), which allows USB sticks and other hardware components to be integrated automatically and let the system administrator select which users can access the cdrom and pluggable devices. The XFCE and KDE desktop environments were also updated. 12.2 ships with KDE 3.5.10; KDE 4 desktops are available but only in development and testing.

Traditionally, Slackware has aimed to be a stable and secure Linux distribution, holding back packages only where there are issues in with stability or security. The developers also prefer to provide a simple design that seems almost spartan compared with other distributions.
