The developers of the GNOME desktop for Unix systems have released the second beta for the upcoming version 3.8 of the open source desktop. GNOME 3.7.2 drops the fallback mode as planned and the developers have completed porting all components of the desktop to GStreamer 1.0 as well.

Fallback mode was used on systems that can not provide 3D hardware acceleration and is a user interface that is somewhat reminiscent of GNOME 2. To appease users that still want a more GNOME 2-style desktop, the developers are currently working on collecting several plugins for the GNOME Shell that let users recreate the look and feel of fallback mode with it. Going forward, GNOME 3 will use llvmpipe to run on 2D-only systems, similar to Ubuntu's Unity desktop.

Other improvements to the GNOME Shell are a global configuration menu for search providers. Several applications can announce themselves to GNOME and will present application-specific search results desktop-wide. These providers can now be toggled on or off in the new menu. GNOME's default browser, Epiphany, had its old extension model disabled and now ships with an ad blocker which, however, is disabled by default. GNOME's online account functionality now supports OwnCloud and Flickr and it can connect to Google's services with OAuth 2.0.

Beta 2 of GNOME 3.8 arrives almost a week later than expected. The next development version should be released on 19 December with the final released for GNOME 3.8 on 27 March.
